AUTUMN 2020 | JOURNAL COMPILATION EXPLORING THE UNITY AND AFFILIATION OF MY OWN TRANSITIONING LINE OF THOUGHT. TECHNIQUES EXPLORED CONSIST OF ONE LINE ILLUSTRATIONS, STORY TELLING & BINDING
Exploring the unity and affiliation between my own ideas, Line of Thought is a journal compilation of one line illustrations mapping out an engaging narrative through the power of design. An adventure into understanding ones transforming line of thought towards changing events, scenarios and scenery.
The narrative behind LINE OF THOUGHT stems from understanding my own ideas as they shift between differing settings and scenarios. It’s a guide between thought and acknowledging the journey to acquire that particular thought. When following my ideologies, I want the audience to understand their version of the story by entering their own realm of thought. I want to create a new pathway for every reader.
NARRATIVE SYNOPSIS
My Line of Thought journal is a personal exploration of ideas and concepts as I begin to understand the connotations between changing scenarios. Following a nonlinear style, the audience flicks through the pages of the journal, watching the solid one line weave around the page depicting visuals in which aid in my line of thought. The journal touches on themes including family, music, flowers and love as the narrative progresses. The narrative concludes with a special verse which allows the reader to revise and reflect on the material read.
ILLUSTRATION STYLE
I have always been fascinated by one line drawings. How one line can weave around itself illustrating such detail and complexity through one of the simplest concepts known to man. Lines could be considered the basis of anything visual. After all we cross our ‘t’s and dot our ‘i’s using this simplistic notion. This being said, I wanted to explore the complexity of one line drawings to represent the tangled thoughts we sometimes experience. One line drawings can also represent unity, strength and oneness reflecting the period of time it was produced. Line of Thought was designed and put together during the uncertainty of COVID19. The reflection of strength amongst the community was also a theme within the journal.
Each individual illustration is one line, though I decided to join each drawing up in order to make one complete line for when I bound the book. Again the symbolism behind strength and unity is again apparent within this design choice I made.
BINDING CHOICE
As the book was very personal to me, and consisted of my own personal narrative, I wanted to add a personal sentiment to the project by hand making the journal. The process of putting the booklet together was very hands on. Once the narratives and drawings were complete, I then printed them onto a 2m long piece of paper and folded each page to size. This fiddly folding technique served its challenges though enabled the line of thought to never break. Once the page’s had been folded, I then stuck the front and back page to two handmade printed book covers, before using a a coptic binding method (sections of book pages being joined together via a single stitch) to create the book seem. This enabled the reader to carefully flick through the journal without the pages all coming unfolded.
